March 2nd is a special day in history. This was the day in which Texans declared freedom from the tyrannical rule of Santa Anna. This declaration would come just mere days before the valiant defeat at The Alamo in San Antonio. Another defeat for the scraggly Texans followed at Goliad, not far away from Gonzales, where the phrase “Come and Take It” with a cannon were woven on a flag.
The Texas Revolution culminated one month later at the Battle of San Jacinto. Instead of feeling defeated, Texans were determined and emboldened. “Remember The Alamo” was the battle cry. While the Mexican army enjoyed a mid-day siesta, the Texan army being in close proximity, decided to strike in broad daylight. While evenly numbered, the battle was over in 18-minutes. Santa Anna had scurried away, but was soon captured. And with that, Texas became free and independent. Some adages from the Texas Revolution include never giving up, and that freedom is worth fighting for, even worth dying for.
The general who led Texas in the fight for Independence was a man named Sam. Sam Houston. He was a quirky fellow who danced to the sound of his own drum. In fact, Houston was a life-long friend to the Cherokee Nation. Sam Houston was the first President of the Republic of Texas in 1836, and later the first United States Senator from Texas in 1846. Houston was also the Governor of Texas before Texas joined the Confederacy. He refused to swear allegiance to this new confederation, and thus stepped down into exile. Sam Houston is among the greatest characters in not just Texas history, but human history. Besides excelling as a general and public leader, lessons that we can all learn from the way Sam Houston lived his life include being true to ourselves, even if that doesn’t fit in the current times. Stand up for what’s right, even though it may be unpopular. Be courageous.
Houston’s birthday just so happened to be on March 2nd. Long live Houston, and long live Texas! I’m sincere in my belief that .tx is the embodiment of the Texan spirit in the modern age. .tx is the sword and musket, the house and land, the carriage and bountiful food.
